Summer Sunshine!

Dear Burlingame School District Community,

There is much to be proud of as we turn the corner and race to the finish of the 2013-2014 school year. We have amazing students, supportive parents, and a wonderful community! A great deal of thought and planning has gone into the “next steps” in our district. This year our community participated in writing a Common Core Implementation Plan and the Local Accountability Plan (LCAP). Both of these plans will guide our next steps.

We have many things to celebrate this year. Our teachers, students and administrators experienced their first “Smarter Balanced” assessments. Music was heard in the hallways from kindergarten to middle school and our students showcased their musical talents all year long. Our focus on the Common Core standards has our students thinking and writing in every content area. We refreshed our network, rolled out 519 Laptops, 370 iPads, and 20 Apple T.V. devices for staff and students. The use of technology as a tool has enhanced our students’ research and communication skills. Student creativity in the classroom can be seen everywhere.

As we bid one another a fond farewell for “Summer Sunshine” a look back at all that was accomplished this year is an important step and an acknowledgement of the efforts of all our community. In late Spring, one of our students contacted my office to make an appointment with me to share a project he was working on in his 5th grade class. He was knee-deep in creating a presentation about “The Best School District ever.” Ben Francesconi, a student at Washington Elementary, explained to me that his family moved from out of state to California and that the Burlingame Community welcomed his family with open arms. He told me he thought BSD is a terrific place and that he wanted everyone to know about it. Ben asked if I would help him get “the word out.” When I explained the word is “out” and that we continue to grow by leaps and bounds, we agreed on one very special point; there is no such thing as too much when it comes to sharing good news. A student built Prezi is a great way to celebrate the end of a very, successful school year.

Have a restful, relaxing, and rejuvenating summer!

Best,
Maggie

BSD Common Core Implementation Plan

The California Department of Education (CDE) apportioned funds to school districts to implement the Common Core Standards in preparation for the Smarter Balanced Assessments in 2014-2015. As a condition of receiving CCSA implementation funds, a school district is required to develop and adopt a plan delineating how the CCSS implementation funds will be spent.

Burlingame Elementary School Tidings

At the start of the 2013-2014 school year we celebrated the 100 Year Anniversary of the Burlingame School District. We thought it fitting to bring back the newsletter and the original title, the "BEST" which stands for the "Burlingame Elementary School Tidings" as a way to honor and celebrate our community.

Common Core State Standards

Governor Jerry Brown signed Assembly Bill 484, which immediately suspended CST or "STAR" testing, which is not aligned to the new Common Core State Standards. Next school year, the entire state of California and 44 other US States, will formally transition to the Common Core curriculum.

With the exception of the CST in Science in grades 5 and 8, California students will not be taking the STAR tests this spring. Instead, AB484 will fund field-testing of the Smarter Balanced assessments, which are written specifically to the Common Core.

The following information about Common Core Standards from the Aspen Institute provides a clear explanation for the rationale for Common Core and what parents can do to help their children.

Additional Common Core Resources:

BSD Targeted Action Plan (TAP)

BSD collaborated with staff and the community to create the TAP. The TAP includes a set of comprehensive goals that will serve to provide direction and ultimately a set of action steps for a three year plan.
